Educational Focus
Children arrange pictures to tell a story. At first they are given the first picture in the sequence and then progress to arranging all pictures on their own.
Skills: Practice sequencing.

Level 1: Arrange 2 pictures in their correct place in order to tell a story. The 1st picture is already in place.
Level 2: Arrange 2 pictures in their correct place in order to tell a story. One of the pictures is already in place.
Level 3: Arrange 3 pictures in their correct place in order to tell a story. None of the pictures are in place.

Together Time Tips
Your child can have fun making up stories. Here are some story-time activities for your special “together time.”

RAINY DAY STORY FUN
Here’s what you will need:

  • 5 -10 colorful pictures (e.g. ice cream cone, dog, flower)
  • A large sheet of paper
  • Colored pens or markers
  • A wall to hang the paper at the child’s eye and hands level

Glue the pictures on a large sheet of paper and hang the paper up on the wall. Cover your child’s eyes, and much like the game “Pin the Tail on the Donkey”, have your child place his or her finger on the paper wherever he or she wants. Then, have the child open his or her eyes and tell you a short story, using the chosen picture as a starting point. Children enjoy this activity and will willingly participate, even covering their own eyes!

PICTURE FISHING
Here’s what you will need:

  • Newspaper
  • Masking tape
  • Yarn or string
  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Colored pencils or markers

Make a fishing pole by rolling up newspaper, and winding the masking tape around it. Then, have your child help you draw at least 6 pictures of various items, such as a house, a dog, a cat, a sun, a boy, a girl, a ball, or a car. Now, cut out the pictures and attach yarn or string to each. You and your child can now start fishing. Help your child fish out 3 pictures and attach each picture to the fishing pool by tying the string to it. Have your child put the pictures in any order and make up a short story about them. Happy Fishing!

LET’S PRETEND
Here’s what you will need:

  • Old magazines

Flip through old magazines and select pictures that describe a scene, preferably pictures with people. Discuss the scene with your child by asking questions such as: What’s happening in the picture? Where is it? Who are the people? What is he/she doing? What do you think will happen next? Then, select roles and act out the scene. While you are acting out the scene, use questions when necessary to guide and prompt your child. Have Fun!

Rewards
Your child deserves a reward for his/her efforts. Each time your child completes 3 screens a reward awaits – a star. As your child progresses and completes more screens, the number of stars grows and grows. Your child can accumulate up to 12 stars. A screen is considered “completed” after your child matches all the objects in the screen. Please note: The stars will continue to accumulate even if you decide to change the difficulty level for your child.

Help
Before beginning, discuss each picture with your child so that the story and its sequence become clear. In level 1, the first picture is already in its correct place. Point this out to your child and then continue helping your child arrange the pictures in the correct order. Once the pictures are in the correct order, discuss the story with your child. Point out to your child that in level 2, one of the pictures is already in its correct place but not necessarily the first picture and that in level 3, none of the pictures are in their correct place.
